Water Wall | Danielle Kwaaitaal

5 December 2020 - 31 January 2021
Overview

The exhibition 'Water Wall' by artist Danielle Kwaaitaal (1964, NL) shows work from different periods in the artist's career, from 2009 to the present. The selection includes work from the series Whispering Waters, Apres nous le Deluge, Florilegium and Ultraviolet.
Danielle Kwaaitaal approaches classical themes in a contemporary way. The works on display are all photographed underwater and show the clear relationship between photography and painting, which forms a recognizable starting point in Kwaaitaal's work. Kwaaitaal's love for painting is expressed in the aesthetics and composition of her image.

The exhibition shows work from the most recent underwater series ULTRAVIOLET (2020). In this, Kwaaitaal takes a completely new artistic direction. For this series, Kwaaitaal photographed glass vases and ceramic pots. She focuses primarily on the shapes and contours of the objects, followed by the choice of materials; transparent or solid. Subtle shades of light and dark, translucent and opaque can be distinguished. These works are made with a real painter's eye. With the help of Ultravoilet, Kwaaitaal seems to move further and further away from her original medium, photography.

Danielle Kwaaitaal's work has been shown internationally in various exhibitions and is part of various collections of museums and companies in the Netherlands and abroad.
